COPY CAT A R RAHMAN

A.R Rahman’s copycat ways exposed! Dear Sir/Madam, Its is sad that, how can you nominate a guy for Oscar who is copying music from western musicians and selling it in India. It is absulutely disgusting to see the name in the list. He is getting famous by doing nothing more than a copy-paste job.A R Rahman, Indian Bollywood music director, is good in sound but not good in creating or composing original music, he did lot of plagiarism in his music, copied western music, changed few things on it and naming that its his product. What we’ve managed are only some of the unearthings. There are, obviously, a cart-load more. Considering Rahman draws his inspiration from soundtracks that are not easily accessible or heard by an average Indian (other than a hardcore music aficionado), he did a lot of plagiarism.Say Boo to rahman!!! He is a commercial crap!!
Song 1. Hello Mr. ethirkatchi [Film: Iruvar] The opening piano part definitely inspired. Source: Dave Grusin's Memphis Stomp, from the OST of The Firm, released in 1993.Genuine copy of the piano intro sequence.
Song 2. Kuluvalile [Film: Muthu]The background rythm and beats inspired from the song 'rescue me' by Fontella Bass. The song was part of the OST of the film 'Sister Act', released in 1965.The rythm has been used. And also a copy from like a virgin ( Madonna).

Song 3. Akkadannu naanga [Film: Indian]Again, the background beats are inspired. Source: Paul Young's 'Love of common people', from the album 'No Parlez', released in 1983.Oh sure, the beats are copied.
Song 4. Anbae anbae [Film: Jeans]The opening sequence seems inspired from Peter Gabriel's 'Of these, hope...' from the album 'Passion: Music from the last temptation of Christ'.Song 5. Shakalaka Baby [Film: Mudhalvan]The rhythm loop with an underground feel is also found in the track 'Flight IC 408' by State of Bengal and the track 'Aint talkin bout dub' by Apollo 440.Possibly a commercially available loop, done with some improvisations by Rahman. The loop appears almost throughout the Apollo 440 track and at places in Flight IC 408. Song 6. Thillana thillana [Film: Muthu]The opening African female humming is ripped off from Deep Forests 'Night Bird'.Oh sure, ripped. Just that initial humming part. But if Deep Forest can rip off native African sounds....!Song 7. Poopookkum osai [Film: Minsara Kanavu]The beats seem inspired from Lebo M's 'Rhythm of pride lands: Kube', which was last part of the Disney's Greatest Pop hits collection. The beats are sure inspired. Song 8. Thenmerku paruvakkaatru [Film: Karuthamma]The beats are similar to a track by Dr Alban, 'Om we rembwe ike'. And the tune is from a jazz music cd. Song 9. Paarkadhey [Film: Gentleman (1993)]Alleged to be inspired from the Osibisa number 'Kelele'

Song 10. Ekamevadhvitheeyam - Theme music from Baba [Film: Baba]Inspired from the the background music of The Untouchables (1987).'Ekamevadhvitheeyam' means "there is only one paramatma, no second entity". This song opens almost exactly like the prominent score from the cult classic 'The Untouchables' with music by Ennio Morricone. Song 11.Ottagatha Kattikko [Film: Gentleman (1993)]Highly inspired by Raj Koti's Telugu pop song 'Eddem ante' sung by Malgadi Shuba, in 1991. album 'Chik pak chik bam', with music by Raj Koti.Song 12. Pudhu Vellai Mazhai (Film: Roja)Yanni’s track, Quiet Man, from his album In The Mirror, has a particular crescendo part, which sounds suspiciously similar.Song 13. Tu Hi Tu (Film: Kabhi Na Kabhi) had Rahman’s music and the beginning of the song sounds so much like The Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel! Song 14. jumbalakka (Film: en swasa katre) It’s a copy of a Spanish song.Song 15. Luka chhupi (Film: Rang de basanti): The intro Guitar is a straight rip from the intro that comes in a song called “Dogs” by Pink Floyd Song 16. Background score (Film: Rangeela) and a lot of the songs in there: Are a direct inspiration from music by Deep Forest (their first album, the one with a green color album cover).
Song 17. Telephone (Hindustani, Indian) : is directly inspired from a song called “Happy Nation”, All that she wants (Ace of base)
Song 18. Anbe anbe kollaathe (Film: Jeans) Copied From Passion (Peter gabriel - Last temptation of Christ) Song 19. Akkadaanu naanga (Film: Indian) Copied From Love of common people (Paul young) Song 19.Mellisaye Film: Mr.Romeo Copied From Theme music (Ennio Morricone - For a few dollars more) Song 20. The tune for the title track for the movie “Lakshya” is a direct copy of the guitar riff in ACDC’s “Hard as a rock”. Song 21. Thaiyya Thaiyya (Film: Uyirae) seems eerily remeniscent of The Corr’s “Silver Strand”.
Song 22. o humdum suniyo re... he copied the music from one of backstreet boys song... Song 23. Film: Rubaroo Film: Rang de Basanti has striking resemblance to and feels inspired from Breakfast at Tiffany of Deep Blue SomethingSong 24.Tu bin bataye Film: Rang de Basanti Copied from Kaempfert's mid-20th century creation. Wotsay.Song 25. Tasi taxi song, Film: Sakarakati is resounding like Daddy Yankees Gasolina
Song 26. Film: Elay- Neram vanduduchu song resounding like The Corrs - MTV Unplugged - Toss The FeatherSong 27. Muquabala (Film: Hum se hai muquabala, kadhalan) Dr. Alban's African tribe {in fact many other songs have lifted the beat of this songSong 28. Film: Bombay, Theme music - Wyaat Earp
Song 29. Puthu vellai mazhai (Film: Roja) Chariots of Fire Theme music, Karft werk Song 30. Chikku bukku chikku bukku rayilu (Film: Gentleman) British Airways Commercial Song 31. Mangta hai kya (Film: Rangeela) Devil inside(INXS) Song 32. Thanneerai kaathalikkum(Film: Mr.Romeo) Copied from Madonna songSong 34. Ennai kaanavillaye(Film: kaadhal desam) Enigma (MCMXC AD)
Song 35. en veettu thottathil (Film: Gentleman)naadhavindhu (Thirupugazh) Song 36. margazhi poove (Film: May Maadham) SuprabhadamSong 37. sowkyamaa kanne (Film: Sangamam)Vaanthin meethu (Ramalinga swamigal arutpa)Song 38: Vandae madharam (music album)Copied from Loreena Mc kennet, Mystics Dream and another albums

  1. you cannot say that ar rahman is copying blatantly but of course he is influenced by some of the tracks and loops. All artists especially musicians all over the world are influenced by other musicians. Besides, AR rahman never copied a tune completely, like other indian film musicians do. He has talent, which is now recognised all over the world. We must give his due.

  3. There are only 16 notes...there is no harm in getting inspired...not a crime at best. Besides he does not lift them outright! Some license should be given...even Jai Ho was inspired by ABBAs Money..Money...Money! so what if it is good to the ears.He is otherwise a commited composer!

  4. Listen to African music, french music, german music, egypt music, carribean music, american music, arabic music, indian music and create a song with a mixture of all the above and sell it in india. You will be the greatest composer in India.

Indian music is dieing. Foreign music is being mistaken as Indian music. We are losing our culture, seeing others.

    2. after extensive research, I've come to the conclusion, Rahman is a very big plagiarist and is not worth most of the accolades.

What an irony of a world we live in!

    3. In 90's we have no youtube so we have no way to hear foreign songs.but now we have you tube then only we found that Rahman is real copycat.

    4. Absolutely correct! Each and every one of rahman's music is copied! He uses samplers from around the world and his team feedsthem into music programme to produce sounds! He is probably the biggest ever copycat! I have hardly heard his music since 2010 barring one or two movies! And none of the songs are nostalgia inducing! Many of his earlier hits sound absolutely stale now

  5. i hav a request to you. i know u dont like ARR but dont u must accept the fact that he is one of the greatest composers ever born in the world. u got only the very few songs that ARR had inspired from, but he had made hundreds of other great compositions by his own. Inspiring from others work is not a crime. Besides there are uncountbly many songs in the world and there is a possibility of feeling similarity in some of them. Dont think that it is blatant copy. There is only very small parts of the song he has inspired.. rest he made himself only. i challenge u that u cannot find a whole song inspired from others' composition by ARR.
one more thing... better u search this one also.. international composers copied from A R Rahman. find it and then decide who is the real copycat. If you check some of other indian composers composisions u may realise the greatness of ARR...

no doubt... i have great respect to rahman... some great compositions... splendid and great sound engineering... he setup a benchmark in indian music...

if anybody diplomatically want to witness his composition and see the straight lifts or rather copycat acts... just search for Dr.Alban songs... most of his initials compositions which are better than the originals or just straight lifts from Dr.Alban.

    2. I confronted AR Rahman and he admits that he did copy these .. his argument "innocent copying" used samples from Zero G without reading their terms of service. He is not even a regular composer. Cannot sing even if his life depends on it ..Just a wiz with electronics and synths ..tweaks and samples sounds ..alters midi files mercilessly.. has paid millions of dollars to western musicians .. used Bablesberg Cinematic orchestra to bring his compositions to some sense .. he is subject matter of research on copyright infringement..a major ivy league University is going to expose him with my help

  6. i also have small request. There are more inspirations than posted here. Also, we are not in the profession of music to spend as much time as ARR to find out all the songs that he ripped. We can give only samples

    1. Exactly, if you research extensively, you can find out that almost all of his songs are a mix and match of different international songs and plenty of old Indian songs, which aren't reproduced in youtube yet. He started of very young, learnt the nuance of recording, spent loads and loads of time in listening to international music..and when his chance came up through the connections his father created, he brought in all the countless hours he spent in listening to international music and the recording skills he developed owing to starting at the early age, to deftly(which he thinks) create songs that wouldn't easily give their similarities..But now that youtube has become popular, most of the songs where he copied from, are out on the internet. It's really a shame that he is receiving so much accolades for what is a copy-mix-match works of his. And another astonishing thing is - he never really speaks about anything about this in any of his interviews. That speaks volume about the man! He was basically living as an invisible man in the world, spent all his time in listening international music, and when opportunities came via the platform created by his father, he started creating an illusion. To me, no man has ever deceived millions of people like he did!

  10. I'm raja sir's fan, and I have 8 years experience in music industry, and i'm a pianist myself. But the point is most of the songs you have mentioned doesn't seem to be even inspired, then there goes the point of copying. Every musician is inspired. Thats not wrong. If he had ripped a song and introduced to us as his own, like how harris did with unfaithful, then its wrong. And by the way he got an oscar for his composition. You cannot prove that slumdog's tracks are inspired or copied, cuz they are not!! Its his creation and he deserved those oscars. To respect music, first learn to respect a musician. Do not judge a talent which is far superior than yours.

  22. Lets look at the issues here for a moment.
    - Is Rahman a great musician - YES
    - Are all his compositions original - NO
(lets not beat around the bush)
    - Does he deserve an Oscar - YES
    (so does many Indian composers)
    - Is there a proper definition btw copying vs inspired - NO
    - Is copying / getting inspired legal - DONT KNOW
    - Is copying / getting inspired moral / ethical - NO

At the end of the day, the simple way to look at this is - Rahman composes songs, we listen and enjoy and shell out money through CDs and albums, Rahman gets richer.

There is no point in counter-commenting each other (including obscene language). It is a free society, and the blogger has the right to publish his thoughts / evidence. The blogger isn't asking you to start hating Rahman.

Remember - Ignorance is bliss but information is power.

For those who cursed the blogger - Don't shoot the messenger. If you are uncomfortable with the findings, go and ask ARR himself whether he copies or not.

  27. Great to see that you have taken the time & effort to make a list of ARR's 'inspirations' & post it. He has to be one of the luckiest person for having blatantly copied songs left right & centre; pass it on and people blindly accept that they are his songs!

Most of them get inspired by other musicians but this guy is lame - he copies whole songs or segments shamelessly. It is sad that such low lifes get credit that they are not worth of while true talent is ignored. ARR's music is the equivalent of junk food - consume now & forget the next minute. There is no recall value or longevity. Most of his 'music' ends up being revolting and doesn't deserve the time or the money. There's much better things to do with one's time than waste it on him.

  29. Okay, bro, first off, just to present the other side of the argument, I can tell you that even western musicians and artists have been "inspired" by A.R. Rahman. Will.i.Am is one among them. Also, it has been said that James Horner had copied one of his tracks in his soundtrack Avatar from Yuvan Shankar Raja's scores, another prominent South Indian Musician. Now, James Horner might or might not have even heard of Yuvan, and may have realized that his score had similarities to Yuvan's, if any, only after he had finished producing his track. A musician has 61 keys/notes and various octaves of the same notes, give or take, to work around and it doesn't really matter if they are inspired. Only blatant copy artists such as Deva who shamelessly copied Michael Jackson's "Why You Wanna Trip On Me" from his 1991 album, Dangerous and various other western songs are to be seriously lambasted. Another culprit in this regard is Harris Jayaraj. While I do like some of his songs (some of his songs are masterful), he constantly tries to provide hits, and either steals the template/raaga from A.R. Rahman, or from himself. While this is acceptable, it is only acceptable to a certain point until listeners get bored with the same type of sounding tunes. A.R. Rahman's scores and tunes are unmatchable. Bass patterns, and some classic western music notations which are reused are of no problem at all. Till date, he has never blatantly copied, or reused a song from a Western artist, and his music speaks beyond words. His production quality is also top-notch, as his expertise in using various instruments is unparalleled. So before you criticize Rahman, take a look at other blatant copyists and decide whether a few bass patterns, and drum patterns really influence how you listen to music, compared to listening to recycled tunes from failing music artists.

P.S. Excuse any typos as I don't wish to go back and edit it all. Don't use that against me and in turn, deviate from the topic at hand. Peace.

  30. Great work!! Rahman is one of the best composers in India.. but that's it.. He wasn't auditioned by God as some die-hard fans say, is not the best ever India has produced, and many of his songs are lifted or'inspired' as they say. But that's fine too.. Just don't say that he is the best of all.

  31. AR Rehman is NOT a composer. He does the arrangemnt of the songs and he is damn good at it. Most music directors work like a company where the team does the work and the face gets the credit. Nothing wrong with it. Jai Ho isa Sukhvinder singh composition and so is Chaiya Chaiya. But calling AR the best ever is stretching it too far. Down south Ilayaraja SIr is the best allrounder. Rehman does not come close. Using an existing tune to make a beautiful song is inspiration and not copying. Anu Malik and Pritam and Bappi are copy cats. Not Rehman.

  32. Guys..! Chill..
Basically Copy concept has three categories
    Direct Copy, Imitation & Inspiration
Direct copy is the direct tune/beat copy
Imitation is the modification/improvisation of direct copied version
Inspiration is just to take the feel of the tune/beat

So.. you judge what category rahman fits in..

  36. Many people here didn't even listen to the original tracks mentioned above and are commenting on emotional basis, for their liking of A.R Rahman. Some comments are so funny here and also other

links as i read them. They are so much liking of his music, that barely anyone knows, how he cleverly rips of music tunes and others, from here and there and makes money out of it.

He worked under illayaraja, who thought Rahman "how to copy music from others musicians", coz illayaraja himself is big copy cat. This is how music are made by south india. Not to mention north

india also does copy music a lot. The copyright law here is too weak, so these so called musicians are living by it.

These kind of people live a life filled with full of lies. Even on TV he lies about his life background, such a big fake life he is living and people are praising him.

Here is the thing, in india, the people in 70's, 80's, 90's know what is music, the people then listened to all kind of music. But then the new generation people, seems to only listen to

songs/music in india, and they have zero knowledge about music from the rest of the conuntries and other genres.

You should all go and read rahman's history, then you will know, for him how easy it was to copy music. This is the way they live their life, a fake f**king life. And well, it's easy to FOOL

indian audience, very easy. Copy tunes, beats, songs, etc., from others and make it their own music, create it, sell it, make money, get awards, and live a fake life.

People here who loves the so called Rahman and illayaraja, doesn't what they are, grow up!

Do this, get your EARS cleaned, listen to the original and copied music carefully mentioned above, then come and comment here. And when you comment, don't be emotional, LOL. Get a life you people.

And start listneing to other musicians from other countries, don't be so immature.

    1. Damn thats a lot of hate. What is with all the personal attacks? You don't like his music? That's fine but what fake life are you talking about? His father was a composer, he had an advantage. Would you not use every advantage he had? So his music is more western inspired/imitated/copied. And honestly, who cares about what his life is? We are talking about his music, as long as he isnt doing something super illegal I could care less.

As for his music and copying, I can't really disagreed that he has copied quite a bit(whether there were handshake deals or whether its legal ethical I don't know). Copying happens quite a bit in the west as well without giving credit. Rahman may have copied a lot, but he at least does a good job mixing the copied tune well in his song(this is my opinion). Most of the info is out there, and if the other musicians he copied from really cared they would have done something. Rahman may not be the best ever, but he's definitely one of the better ones in India. If you don't like his music thats fine, but this is to far. I am still a fan and until he does something that shows otherwise, if your not thats cool. Best wishes

Now lets get to the point. Has AR Rahman copied songs? Yeah, he clearly has based on what you and I define as copying. But here is my issue with what you are saying. You are pinpointing things that are so specific that would not get defined as copying at all in most normal cases. Sure some of these are blatant lifts, but some of these examples take literally 5 seconds of two songs and pin it together(Example: Tu Bin Bataye and Keampferts creation). The similarity is so small that its pretty minute so that's unfair to Rahman. An example of a blatant rip is the Memphis Stomp and Hello Mr Edirkatchi.Or Mangta Hai Kya and Devil Inside. And let's be real even in the West credit isn't really given.Other musicians have done worse copying the isreal national anthem and stealing an entire song without even trying to change it. And for all you can say about rahmans theivery, he has done many original songs and brought an oscar to India(yes I know Jai Ho was inspired/copied from Mozarts 40th symphony). If you aren't a fan that's fine we are allowed to all have our opinions. But be fair in evaluating him.

  41. HE, is a pure and CLEVER, copycat and charges at least 2-5 crore per show and charges 4-8 CR per movie ,it is the fact, not at all jealous but sad, since he doesn't deserve this much overrating. Who fools us as we don't have much western musical knowledge.(and please be good and please don't tell bad words .we can never ever justify and support meritless acts and commands or demands, because we know what is right and wrong, in our mind to be frank ,because(as)god is inside us and everywhere
and he earns crores and crores for copying and his demand is very high, please respect the truth,
AS. Buddha once told that the sun and the moon and the heavenly, stars. Cannot be hidden forever so as truth.
and actually if you look at his attitude during interviews he feels guilty and some or the other way he is hiding something. Then he is fooling all of us and his songs are cleverly hidden. What talent? for a person who lives in luxury and has millions of dollars net worth, and behaves a bit arrogant know we know why he is humble, since he wants to hide it, otherwise he would behave the great raja great Vidyasagar and great ms Viswanathan style proper musician dress code and behaviour but AR. Rahman behaves like a pop star always putting his hands in the pocket. Or ask yourself my dear reader thanks for at least agreeing with me in your mind.
but is this man a really generous person, or is he having the right to demand a lot? he is a real copycat and a very cunning person, does his music have any melody and rhythm and he started composing with a computer, Then ARR FANS WHY IS HE KEEPING QUIET. PROOF(shut off or down your enemy ;EGO....Wonderful research brother. Really great work. Now I am listing the actual music.(keep it up! ,and may god bless you and your family; FOR KNOW WE KNOW...... THE TRUTH.....)./.
OM...Please Have A Look, This Is My Humble Request, from a teenager. Thank You Very Much...
